During the month of February LSBA is sponsoring

HAM FOR THE HUNGRY

This is a project which should benefit everyone (except the hogs :wink: ). We'll get to go hunt! We can help whittle down the excess hog population and of course first and foremost, we can do a good deed to help feed needy families.

We are cureently putting together a list of places that will accept quartered hogs as donations. We have sites in Houston, San Antonio, San Marcos, Temple and Houston. If you know other places (such as shelters or soup kitchens that will accept skinned and quartered donations, please post back or let me know so that I can add them to the list.

This is somewhat a "do it yourself" project. By that I mean that every bowhunter is encouraged to set up group hunts, go to their own lease, or public lands and harvest hogs for this project. We may have some opportunities to hunt come available and if so, we will post back with these as they come available. How well we do with this project, however, depends not only on the efforts of the hunt committee and the LSBA EC, but of each bowhunter willing to go slam some ham for the needy.

I'll be out in February with my bow and pledge at least one hog. Who else wants in?

Here's some locations to drop off hogs. I'll add more as they become available.


1. About 1 mile off of I-35 in San Marcos. Contact is Joe Lee at 512-805-7544 or 512-738-6924. you can also go to their website of feedthelost.com. Joe said they have room for ONE HUNDRED HOGS! You can bring them in simply field dressed and they will take it from there. Of course if the weather is hot, you'll probably need to quarter them out so as to get them into your cooler.

2. You can also go to huntersharvest.org which is Houston based. On their website they list three locations which will take skinned and quartered game. These are
-Open Door Mission - Near I-10 and Lockwood, Call Charles at 281-382-2109 or Andrew at 713-805-3249
-Victory Home Aldine Area and third Ward, Call Joe at 281-935-0990
-Victory Family, Near I-45 and Patton, Call Frank at 713-373-6065/713-699-4357

If you take some in, please post back and let us know the count. Also, don't forget that this is a deduction (that's not why we do it, but it can go toward that new bow).

Might also check to see if there's a soup kitchen in your neck of the woods. Or possibly you could call some local food pantries or churches that minister to the needy. They might not take it themselves, but they might know a place it could be put to good use.

Another possiblility might be to see if we could get an LSBA equivalent of the TBH express. Call it the LSBA express maybe. That way if the hogs could be carried to San Marcos, San Antonio or Houston then they could go to those pantries.

Either way it counts in my book, and it's true to the traditions of some early bowhunters on this continent that would share their game with the those less well off in the tribe.

I was coming home from work one day a couple of years ago when I came upon a half dozen cows in the county road. There was a little wood framed house on a hill so I went there to tell the folks their fence was down. When I knocked on the door there was no replay for a while, finally a little girl opened the door just a crack and peeked out at me. I asked if here Daddy was home and I could tell she was afraid of me and didn't want to admit he was not, so with my biggest grin I bid her a good day and left their yard. I put the cows up, fixed the fence and went on my way. A couple of weeks later I whacked a 150 pound hog. I carried it home, cleaned it and put it on ice. What to do with it????? Remembering the cute little girl I loaded the ice chest and headed out. Luckily her father was home this time. It took 20 minutes for me to get him to understand that I was trying to give him the meat as he spoke not a word of English. I can not speak any Spanish and I'm not sure it would have helped as I think he was from further south than Mexico anyway. Finally after getting my Bow out and making pig sounds I saw the light come on. He called out to his family, 5 little kids from 8 to 2 came out. As is often the case the little girl spoke English better than I do and explained they were very afraid of me at first but her Daddy was thrilled with the Hog. I carried them one or two a month for the next 6 or 8 months until one day they were gone. After the first one, I was meet in the yard with much excitement as the whole family would come out to see what I had brought them.

Here's another place that Dena found to take Hogs in the San Antonio area. This gives us San Antonio, San Marcos and Houston. If someone has one to donate in the Temple area I can get you the phone # for Martha's kitchen who will take them quartered as well.





Dena - here is the contact information for Teen Challenge in San Antonio. They are very interested in receiving meat from Hams for the Hungry. They can take both processed and unprocessed meat. The unprocessed meat should be skinned & quartered.

Thanks for posting the info, Tomme!! Hunter's Harvest is trying to find some other places around the state for us to donate the hogs. They have been very helpful and there are some other projects in the works with them too. Details coming soon!

Way to go, Buff!!! To me, it adds more meaning to my hunts if I know that I will be able to share the bounty with others. Bobby and I fed a family out of our freezer this past year. The father was struck by a drunk driver, has a wife and two kids and was unable to work because of his injuries and multiple surgeries. I have never seen a family more appreciative!

Buff you might try calling either the Social services agencies or perhaps a church that does Charity work in the community to see if there's a local soup kitchen or food pantry. I think that food pantries might want it already broken down to one pound packs, but if there's a homeless shelter or soup kitchen they might be happy to get quarters and chop them up themselves.
