Default Please...aim low

We have a company deer lease where we invite customers to come down and hunt for a weekend. Most of the folks are not really bowhunters. This year on our new lease in Mason I have been heart broken by the amount of deer shot and lost. We have found about half of what they shoot. There seems to be one commond thread for 90% of the deer lost. They aim at the middle of the deer, It ducks and they hit it to high. Myself and 2 good friends have shot a combined total of 11 deer and none have ran over 50 yards after the shot. Please....Please shoot for the elbow not the 12 ring

Amen to that!

I guarantee they'll duck and run out here.

It used to be taught (even in IBEP) to shoot for the middle of the deer. That may be good for rifles, but the sound the bow makes is faster than the arrow. I've spined 8 deer and I sure wasn't aiming there. They just managed to duck that much. I always try for the bottom third of the deer, maybe even the bottom quarter.

On hogs it's even more critical. The heart is on the very bottom of the pig (almost on the skin) and the spine is no more than half way up. I'd bet that more than 90% of the hogs that are "lost" are hit too high.

I've seen you say this before and it is one of my favorite, and I've been known to eve quote you on it.

My lone shot this year was a miss low and the first thing that popped into my mind after the brief cussing at myself was this saying. My problem was I acted and didn't think the shot through and aimed like I was still shooting my longbow. End result with the faster bow was a miss low, but it didn't kill me and I learned from it.

Thanks for reminding everyone about this very important fact, and remember practice targets will stand there all day and let you shoot at them without moving, but deer never will!

Always put your aim on the animal too...not underneath it
