Basic Longbow and Recurve Setup

Yesterday I met Bob over at Santa Fe Archery to do a little shooting and the question came up about Brace Height. I found that I had been measuring from a different point on the bow than Bob and Steve of SFA. So I decided to do a little more research on the subject and came across this.

It is a pretty good place to start for anyone just getting started. BTW after reading it, it appears many folks measure brace differently, but I'll let y'all read and decide for yourselves what is best for you.

Very good information there Derek. I went back to find out where I got my info from and it was from Bob Lee's information booklet that he send out with his bows. Bob

It seems just as long as brace is always measured from the same point (no matter where that point is) and you find out what shoots best you are in business.

I can't remember where I got my information originally but as far back as I can remember the back of the rest has always been the point I used. The problem with this is when a you get a manufactures recommended brace height, you have to know where they measured from. This give me something to play with during the off season to see what height my bows like best....

For the past 50 years, I have set the fistmele (brace Height) from the string to the deepest part of the grip on longbows or recurves. Generally the manufacturer will supply a "ball park" measurement. You can adjust the fistmele by twisting the string to get to the "sweet spot"
